Note on Husband: James Hancock KAY (1) - shared note

James opened a painter's and plumbing business in Cotham Road Kew in 1857.

He signed as a witness to the marriage of his daughter, Susan Emma KAY and William BURSTON, on 25th August 1884, in Kew.

On 13 September 1861, The Ancient Order of Foresters was founded in Kew. James was one of the founding Brothers, and he held the office of financial secretary almost since the start of the order in the district. He was also a member of the order of Druids and the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows (M.U.O.O.F). Many members of these lodges attended his funeral, in regalia, and some of the Foresters were his pall-bearers. The funeral took place on the afternoon of Wednesday 30 September 1891, the cortege leaving his residence at about half past two. His body was encased in a plain wooden coffin across which his Forester's scarf was laid amidst a large number of floral offerings.
