The Roes of Manchester

Francis Roe, my great-great grandfather, left Parwich, Derbyshire to follow his elder brother, John to Manchester. He ended his journey at Newton Heath near the centre of Manchester where he found work in the brewery trade.

John Roe, Francis’ eldest brother had made the journey to Newton Heath over 15 years earlier. John had met Hannah Cheesebrough and they married on 7th June 1827 at Manchester. By 1839, when Francis arrived in Manchester, John and Hannah had five children.

Joseph Roe, the youngest of the family, married Sarah Herrick at Marston upon Dove, Derbyshire and followed his brothers to Manchester.

Sarah Roe, the sister of John, Francis and Joseph married Joseph Ardon in Derby in 1844 and also went to Manchester.

Newton Heath is an area of Manchester.

Manchester United was created out of the Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club.

Francis Roe, my great-great grandfather, left Parwich, a picturesque farming village in Derbyshire, in his early twenties to make his way to Manchester. There he met and married Mary Ann Walker, a girl from Middlewich in Cheshire. Mary Ann was christened at St Michaels, Middlewich on 7 April 1822. They married on 29 April 1844 at the Cathedral in Manchester and lived in Spear St, in the centre of Manchester. Their first child, Thomas, was named after his father, a farmer back in Parwich.

John Roe, my great grandfather, married Dinah Yeomans in 1875 at Manchester Cathedral.

Albert Henry Roe, my grandfather worked on the railways. He met Ellen Hamnett, in Manchester  where she worked as a maid at a large house in South Manchester. He wooed her by throwing coal over the hedge backing onto the railway. Ellen was born in Withington, Manchester in 1894. Her family lived in Lady Barn, South Manchester, but were originally from Northenden, a village which at the time was in Cheshire. Albert and Ellen married and settled in Withington, South Manchester and had nine children, including three sets of twins. Sadly not all the children survived the traumas of birth.
