William lived at 77 Osborne Street South Yarra in 1906, and at 9 Fawkner Street South Yarra in 1923.
On 22nd February 1923 William's body was found at the extreme end of the Elwood Pier, he was apparently dead and there were stains from his mouth running down his jaw of a reddish brown colour.
He was conveyed to the Alfred Hospital and after death was pronounced he was taken to the Morgue. There was no letter with his body, but the police did find the cork of a small bottle near the body, but no bottle.
His brother, John Henry MATTHEWS testified that he last saw his brother alive on 8th January when he appeared greatly worried and was in a morbid state and was depressed. He told him that he was going to sell up his home and was going to board as his wife was an inmate of the Hospital for Insane and had been there four years. He had her home on probation and she got bad again and that seemed to worry him.
The conclusion of the Inquest if was found that "William Henry MATTHEWS was found dead on the pier having died shortly before from Lysol poison. I decide that he died by his own act whilst mentally depressed."
Willliam made his will on 21st October 1911. He named his sister-in-law Florence Amelia HINSON as the Executrix and left his entire Estate to his wife Helen Norma MATTHEWS. The total value of his Estate was £285 and 12s.
Helen signed as a witness to the marriage of her sister, Ethel Urana Belcher KAY and Edward Thomas Lomar HEALE, on 8th July 1903 in Oakleigh.
Helen lived at Euston Road Oakleigh in 1906.
