In the name of God Amen The seaventh daie of Februarie in the yeare
of our Lord God one thousand six hundred thirtie eight. I
Sampson Stubbes of Butterton in the Countie of Stafford
gentleman the unprofitable servant of God not sicke in
bodie, but strong in minde do will make and with a free
heart render and give againe into the hands of my Lord God,
and Creator my spiritt which hee of his fatherly goodnes
gave unto mee, when hee first fashioned me in my mothers
wombe, makeinge mee a lively and a reasonable creature
nothinge doubting but that for his infinite mercies sett
forth in the precious bloud of his of his dearlie beloved
sonne Jesus Christ our onelie Saviour and redeemer hee will
receive my soule into his glorie and place it in the Company
of the heavenly Angells , and blessed Saints, And as
concerning my body with a good will, and a free hearte I
give it over into the hands of almighty God, when it shall
please him to call for itt, and my spirit to his mercie,
then commendinge it to the earth whereof it came nothing but
according to the article of my faith at the great daie of
the general resurreccion, when I and all true servants of
God shall appeare before the Judgement seate of Christ I
shall receive the the same againe by the mightie power of
God, whereof he is able to subdue all things to himselfe ,
not a corruptible body, immortall, strong but a perfect
bodie in all points like unto his glorious body of my Lord
and Saviour Jesus Christ hopeing and trusting assured lie
through the onely merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour to be
partaker of life everlastinge, with desire that my executors
hereafter named doe see my bodie to be buried within the
Chancell of the parish Church of Butterton before my Pew or
seate there where my father, my mother and my wife were
buried And now for and concerninge all my worldly goods
(although they are of little value) for the which I give
praise and thankes to God for them. Nevertheles I make this
my last will and testament in manner and forme followinge
First I give and bequeath unto the Churchwardens of the
parish Church of Butterton (for the time being) sixe
shillings eight pence for my buriall in the Chancell, in the
place by me before herein appointed. Towards the reparacion
of the said Chancell Item I give and bequeath unto the poore
people of the parishe of Butterton five shillinges to be distributed amongst them by
the overseers of the poore for the time being. Item I give
and bequeath unto the Churchwardens of the parish of Grindon
(for the time being) sixe shillings eight pence towards the
reparacion of the Church of Grindon to be paid to the
Churchwardens. Item I give and bequeath unto the poore of
the parishe of Grindon sixe shillings eight pence to be
distributed amongst them by the the Parson of the Rectorie
of Grindon and the overseers of the poore for the time
being. Also I give and bequeath unto the unto the Parson of
Grindon for the time being sixe shillings eight pence for to
make my funerall sermon upon the daie of my burial. Item I
give and bequeath unto Henry Stubbes my second sonne Parson
of Blore for his filiall and childs parte twelve pence.
Item I give and bequeath unto Ottewell Stubbes my youngest
and prodigall sonne for his filiall and childs parte twelve
pence. Item I give and bequeath unto my Servant Margaret
Mannsfeild one of my best kyne. Item I give and bequeath
unto everie one of my other servants that doe serve me at
the time of my death two shillings more than their wages
which is then due to them. Item I give and bequeath unto
everie one of my executors hereafter in this my last will
and testament named twentie shillings And for the rest of
my goods cattells chattells and debts my funerall expences
being discharged and my debts paid and my legacies herein in
this my last will and Codicill hereunto annexed, and in them
bequeathed and delivered also I doe further give and
bequeath all such other goods cattells chattells and debts
whatsoever that I am possessed of at the time of my death
and decease to all and everie such other person and persons
as the said Sampson Stubbes shall sett downe in writeinge
contained and specified in a Codicill hereunto this my last
will annexed And of this my last will, and testament I doe
by this my present last will and testament make and ordaine
Sir Thomas Milward Knt. & Sampson Subbes my grandchild my
executors, and I doe hereby this my last will utterly
revoake and adnull all and everie other former wills,
testaments,b equeathes, executors, and overseers by mee in
any wise before this time named, willed or bequeathed. Item
I give and bequeath to my servant Margarett Mannsfeild two
Calves the one being a yeare old, and the other a young one,
and in colour redd, and in money thirteene pound sixe
shillings eight pence, and all other goods which before I
have given her, and delivered with my owne hands Her Cowes
which I gave her in all being two and by name Meridue &
Primrose.This will is written by me Sampson Stubbes hand
writeinge and have hereunto put my seale Theis persons being
witnesses to this my last will and testament the eleaventh

Be
it knowne
That whereas I Sampson Stubbes made my last will and
testament in writeinge beareinge date the seaventh daie of
February Anno Domini one thousand sixe hundred thirtie
eight, That nowe for as much as I have changed my minde in
some respect touchinge certaine things in the saud last will
mencioned other then such as I shall not hereby otherwise
dispose of I doe further give and bequeath unto my
grandchild, Sampson Stubbes my greate table standinge in my
house, and the tresles it standeth upon, the forme and all
the settles in the house, the greate Chest standinge there,
the dishboard and Scryne there; the greate table with the
frames it standeth upon in the neither parlour, and the
Cupboard standinge there, the broad table and the frame it
standeth upon in my studdie, The iron barrs in the Chimney
there, and the settles aboute the table the greate iron
Grate in the neither Parlor, the greater standinge bedstocke,
and the testor standinge there and the bedstocks and testors
of the bedd in the Studye and in the neither Chamber, and
also my blocke with the lead weights hanginge upon the
Staires post in the house, and the greate chayres standinge
in the house, neither Parlour, and studye, All which goodes
my will is, should be and remaine to my grandchild in the
house for heirelomes for ever soe long as they continue.
Item I give and bequeath unto my eight other grandchildren
of my daughter in lawe Ellen Stubbes children everie one of
them ten shillings. Item I give and bequeath unto my
grandchilde Marie Stubbs of Blore ten shillins. Item I give
and bequeath unto my sonne Ottewell Stubbes the bedstocks
and the testor over the bed in the over parlour, where I
lye, the featherbed, the bolster, the chaffebedd, two
blankets, one greene Rugg being in the Studye two paire of
flaxen sheets, one paire of hempen sheets, sixe newe
napkins, two little ioyned chaires, two pewter dishes, sixe
spoones, one barrel, one midlinge loome, a dozen of
trenchers, sixe meate dishes of wood, two milke bowles, one
iron long Grate standinge in the house, one pewter
candlesticke one brasse Candlesticke and one Cowe and a
Calfe when the Calfe is calved. Item I give and bequeath
unto Margaret Mansfeild one Cowe, one featherbed, a boulster
two blankets, two paire of flaxen sheets, one Rugg which
lyeth one her bed, one Iron kettle, one paire of bedstocks
toyned which standeth in her chamber, one little Iron grate
in the house one gig or little wheele, one flaxen board
cloath, one hempen board cloth, sixe newe napkins. Item I
gove and bequeath unto Sampson Stubbes my grandchilde the
one halfe of all my bookes, and the other halfe (th Bible
Excepted) I give to my sonne Ottewell Stubbes equally to be
divided betwixt them. Item I give to Sampson Stubbes my
grandchilde all those debts which are oweing to mee by my
Clyents, for which I prosecuted and answered suits for in
his Majesties Courts at London and elsewhere and the bookes
for the same, wherein they are contained. All the rest of my
goods and cattells, and debts unbequeathed I give and
bequeath unto my grandchild Sampson Stubbes, and I require
mine executors, that they cause all things in this Codicill
contained to be performed accordinge to my true meaneinge,
as if the same sett downe in my last will and testament.
Item I give and bequeath to my grandchild Ottewell Stubbes
ten shillings. In witnes whereof to this present Codicill I
have put my hand and seale the eleaventh daie of September
