Basil lived at "Cora Lyn" Main Street Warburton at the time of his death in 1953, with his daughter and son-in-law Frances and Joseph ISHERWOOD.
At about 7.45am on 20th July 1953, Joseph took Basil a cup of tea and some toast to his room. He was unable to get in the door and there appeared to be something wrong with in the room and he called a truck driver in Gerrish's Yard, which was next door, to help him. Both the truck driver and Mr Gerrish came and helped and Mr Gerrish raised the window and climbed in the room.
He found Basil slumped against the door with a rope around his neck. The other end of the rope was was fastened over the top of the door and the end around his neck was drawn tight and deeply embedded into his neck. Basil was pulled clear of the door and first aid was attempted, but there was no sign of life.
Frances ISHERWOOD said at the inquest into her father's death "he had resided at Cora Lynn for 13 weeks prior to this death. During this time he had many worries, both financial and marital and often mentioned these matters to her. During the fortnight prior to his death, he was in a very depressed state of mind, but did not at any time suggest that he would take his life. She last saw him alive on 19th July 1953 when he went to bed at 9.30pm. He appeared to be in reasonably good spirits and had been discussing a change of climate with her and her husband."
Basil died intestate. Administration was granted on his Estate to his widow Anne Josephine HARRISON and his children Basil William HARRISON, Audrey Gwenda HARRISON, Greta Jean LAUBE, Shirley Caroline WRIGHT and Frances Gloria ISHERWOOD. The total value of his Estate was £6,932 4s and 3d.
