Excerpt of Bio of James Stewart from Kilts & Courage, Vol. II by Paul Pace: Nicknamed “Little Stewart” by some of his fellow officers, Stewart was the second son of Jacobite supporter Charles Stewart of Shambelly. Shambelly is located about eighty miles south of Edinburgh near Dumfries. The Edinburgh Annual Register recorded Stewart’s death on Aug. 9, 1819 writing “At Moffat, Colonel James Stewart, late of the 42d regiment.” Commissions: Ens. Nov. 10, 1775 – effective Aug. 15, 1775 (5th Regt.); Lt. Oct. 31 – effective Oct. 7, 1777 (42nd Lt. Inf. Company); Lt. Oct. 25, 1783 (42nd Regt.); Capt. Lt. Nov. 24, 1790; Capt. Mar. 16, 1791 – effective to Capt. Lt. date Nov. 24, 1790; Maj. Oct. 21, 1795; Lt. Col. Dec. 14, 1796; Lt. Col. (Temporary) and Inspecting Field-Officer of Yeomanry and Volunteer Corps in North Britain Dec. 22, 1803; Retired Sept. 7, 1804 (42nd Regt.).
