From Christine via Ancestry:

I found an article giving an account of the trial and the sentences given. Along with 3 others, William was sentenced 27th April 1829 at the Easter session of Chester Assizes. William was aged 21, giving an estimated year of birth as 1807/1808. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation. The offence was committed on the 27th January and he was arrested and jailed the day after. So whoever the father of Mary was, it sure as heck wasn’t our William Edwards! It also casts doubt on William being the father of Samuel 1830. He was baptised mid September. Children were usually baptised fairly promptly after birth. Working backwards he ought to have been conceived December 1829...although I suppose Elizabeth may have wanted to wait a bit because of the scandal. Unless I get another breakthrough, I can’t be certain of this. The reason being that William’s three partners in crime all left 1st October 1829 bound for Tasmania on the ‘Bussorah Merchant’ but William is not on board. I just can’t find evidence of when and on what ship William sailed. There were two possibles in 1829 and one in 1834 but further digging proves none of those were the right person. It is also possible that if William left later than the other three and Elizabeth was allowed access to him, she could have got pregnant late November/early December 1829. I haven’t a clue if such conjugal visits happened– no European Convention of Human Rights back then...
