Neither his birth certificate or the birth registers make any record of Robert's middle name, Rigg, however he used it regularly through out his life. He attended school in Scotland and on his 20th birthday left Scotland and went to New Jersey. He was employed at his trade as a machinist for a time and later served as an engineer aboard a boat traveling from New York to Cuba during the Spanish American War. After the war he was partners with his brother William in a motion picture theater in New Jersey. In 1905 he moved the family to Bridgewater, Connecticut where he purchased a small farm, known as the "Feeney" farm, and set about building a successful poultry business. The family grew from four to six for a few years when his nephews Douglas and Robert Herreboudt came to live with them. Robert and Florence became citizens when she was 48 and he was 58 in 1928.He was a member of the Congregational church. His funeral was officiated by Rev. Wilbur Simmons. Peelan and Planz funeral home, of New Milford, handled the arrangements.2
Her family moved to Canada from England when she was a child and then she went to New York in later years where she met and married Robert. The couple lived in New Jersey for a few years then moved to Connecticut. Besides helping with the poultry business she raised their two daughters, Ruth and Joan and the two nephews that came to live with them. In later years she had heart trouble and spent summers in a cottage that her husband and son-in-laws built for her on Lake Candlewood.2
