He was the Great Duke of Saxony two years before the Danish invasion of England, sixteen years before the Saxon monarchy in England. Originally he was a Pagan and enemy to Charlemagne, he was baptized a Christian in 785 "of his own free will", unlike many of his people who were baptized at the point of the swords of Charlemagne's men.
