Note on Husband: John KIRK

At the time of their marriage at Manchester Cathedral, John & Elizabeth were 'of this parish'. John gave his occupation as 'Carter'. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas PARRY (regular signer) & Anna LATHAM. Elizabeth was born at Coppenhall in 1810.

 

 

At the time of the 1841 census John (30, a Carter) was living at Whiteman’s Building together with his Wife Elizabeth (30) and their children William (7), Ann (5) and Sarah (9 months). Also living with them was Ann Latham (27) possibly Johns sister in law. In the same building was an Elizabeth KIRK (25, Dressmaker).

 

 

At the time of the 1851 census John (44) was living at 4 Mar??? Street, Salford, together with his wife Elizabeth (41) and their children William (17), Ann (15) and Samuel. John gave his occupation as 'Carter', William as Blacksmith ???' and Ann as 'Lace Tagger'. [The original census page is badly damaged.]

 

 

At the time of the 1861 census John (54) was living at 10 Lewin Street, Salford together with his wife Elizabeth (52) and their Son-in-Law John WALKER (25), their married daughter Ann (24), their son Samuel (13) and their Grandson William KIRK (4). John KIRK was a 'Carter'. John WALKER was a 'Type Printer' and Samuel was a 'Type printing machine tenter'.

 

 

At the time of the 1871 census John (64) was living at 10 Williams Street, Monks Coppenhall together with his wife Elizabeth (63). John gave his occupation as 'Labourer in Iron works'. Also living with them were two 'Boarders'. Samuel KIRK (22) and William KIRK (14) who would appear to be the son and grandson mentioned on the 1861 census.

 

 

At the time of the 1881 census John (75) was widowed and living at 10 Williams Street, Monks Coppenhall, in the house of his grandson William (24) and his wife Amy (21). John gave his occupation as 'Labourer'.
