He was firstly a surgeon-apothocary. He was enrolled as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and became Surgeon-General of H.M.Forces. On 13th April 1709 he was made a Burgess of Edinburgh by right of his father, to whom he was served heir on 12th January 1700.
