| info in Notts archives ref GB/NNAF/ C120313 business records Brickmaking was never a main industry in Hucknall but like many other places bricks were made here.Ê I live very close to a place in Hucknall called "The Brickyard".Ê Indeed I used to live on Common Lane which is off wood Lane so I know the area quite well. Ê For William Granger to have had 10 employees he must have had quite a sizeable business in those days. Ê I, of course, don't know where you live or if you have access to Nottinghashire libraries or even ifÊmaybe you would be able to borrow books from the inter-library loan service.Ê I have been checking in books that were written in much earlier years and have found some information about the Granger family.Ê Mr. J. H. Beadrsmore's book 'History of Hucknall Torkard' Êwas published in 1909.Ê On page 62 it says "In 1888 the Charity Commissisoners directed that there should be 11 trustees" for local charities and Wm. Granger was one of them.Ê On page 166 it says In the year 1865 a framed address was given to Zachariah Green one of the Committee was Wm. Granger.Ê Eric Horriben produced a book in the 1960s called "Hucknall: of Lowly Birth and Iron Fortune" which has a page full of information (page 108)about William Granger and his ledgers |
